Kenmore Dishwashers

From the 24-inch built-in to older Elite units: what goes wrong under the counter and what to try first.

Kenmore repair checklist · San Francisco Bay Area

At a glance

Overview

Built-in dishwashers sit hidden under counters, which is exactly why a leak or a pump problem can go unnoticed until the cabinet floor swells. In San Francisco, where galley kitchens and rental units are common, a Kenmore dishwasher often shares a tight space with a sink, a disposer and a stack of plumbing. Here is the lineup we service, the faults we see and the checks that are safe to do at home before you use our Kenmore dishwasher repair service.

The Kenmore dishwasher lineup

A recent model is Kenmore 22-14582, a 24-inch built-in listed in white with UltraWash and SmartWash. Several older Kenmore dishwashers also remain in daily use: Kenmore 587.1525, Kenmore 587.1625 and Kenmore 587.70235. Four Kenmore Elite units, Kenmore 630.13003, Kenmore 630.13023, Kenmore 630.13993 and Kenmore 630.14003, were sold from January 2009 to May 2014 and are no longer sold new.

Where to read the model number

The label is usually on the door frame or the tub rim, visible when you open the door, and sometimes on the side of the inner door panel. Take a photo with the door fully open. If the unit is built into a counter, the label is still reachable without pulling anything out. Our page on finding your Kenmore model number shows other spots.

Complaints that bring people to us

  • Water left in the bottom. The drain pump, a blocked filter, a kinked drain hose or the disposer connection may be involved. Kenmore dishwasher not draining goes through each.
  • Dishes still dirty. A clogged spray arm, a tired circulation pump or a dispenser that does not release detergent. See Kenmore dishwasher not cleaning.
  • Leaks at the door or the floor. Door gasket, inlet connection, a cracked hose or a leak sensor in the base. See Kenmore dishwasher leaking.
  • Dead panel or no start. A door latch that does not register, a control fault or a power problem. See Kenmore dishwasher not starting.
  • Dishes warm and damp at the end. The heating element or the rinse step may not be working as intended.

What the codes can tell you

Code meaning changes with the model family, so always note which code you see and when. Some examples we cover: C3 means the dishwasher will not drain, F8E1 is a slow drain, F6E2 is a water inlet valve failure, F5E1 is a door switch failure, and E1 signals water leak detection. The full index lives at Kenmore dishwasher error codes.

Your first steps, kept outside the cabinet

  1. Make sure the door closes and latches firmly; a bit of cutlery or a tall dish can stop it.
  2. Check that the breaker feeding the dishwasher, or the switch controlling its circuit, is on.
  3. Remove the bottom rack and clean the filter area of food and debris you can reach by hand.
  4. Run the sink disposer clear and look at whether sink water drains normally, since a blocked disposer can hold the dishwasher back.
  5. Look under the sink for a kinked or crushed drain hose and confirm the supply valve is open.
  6. Do one controlled power reset, then write down any code that returns.

Leave the lower access panel alone. Behind it live the pump, the valve and wiring that should only be touched with the power isolated.

Installation details we check

Drain connections shape a lot of dishwasher trouble. A high drain loop or an air gap keeps sink water from running back; if it is missing or set too low, drainage suffers. A disposer knockout plug left in place blocks the hose completely after a new install. We also check the supply line, the leveling of the tub and whether the unit was pushed in so far that it kinks a hose.

Moving on to a visit

When the checks do not solve it, request Kenmore dishwasher repair. We diagnose first, provide a written estimate and begin repairs only with your approval. Stop using the machine if you see water spreading, smell burning or hear grinding.
