Overview

Microwaves are the appliance people lean on most for quick meals, and in San Francisco they are often the only cooking appliance in a small studio or a rented in-law unit. A Kenmore microwave that stops heating, sparks or goes dark leaves a gap fast. This guide covers the countertop and over-the-range models we service and what each kind of fault usually means.

The Kenmore microwave lineup we cover

We cover five Kenmore microwaves, all marked current. Two are over-the-range: Kenmore 22-83383, a convection model at 1.8 cu. ft., and Kenmore 22-87062 at 1.7 cu. ft. Three are countertop: Kenmore KMCMB809BK09, Kenmore KMCMF211BK10 and Kenmore KMCMV207S207. Older Kenmore microwaves that are no longer listed are still common in rentals, and we service those too.

Locating the label

On a countertop microwave the label is usually on the back panel or along the door frame inside the cavity edge. An over-the-range unit usually carries it on the side wall of the cavity or just inside the door opening. Open the door and check the frame before pulling anything out. For an over-the-range unit, take a photo with a phone instead of reaching behind it.

What goes wrong

  • It runs but the food stays cold. The high-voltage side is the likely area, and that stays a technician-only job. See Kenmore microwave not heating for the problem-first checks.
  • The turntable does not turn or grinds. A cracked roller ring, a misaligned coupler or a motor fault can each cause it.
  • The door will not latch or the display stays on with the door open. The latch hooks and door switches work as a set, so a worn hook may confuse several switches at once.
  • Sparking inside the cavity. A damaged waveguide cover, food residue or a chipped interior wall can cause arcing. Stop using the unit.
  • Dead display or no response. Check the outlet or the breaker, then consider the control board and the internal fuse.
  • Over-the-range unit vent fan or light fails. The microwave shares its housing with the fan and the lamp, so those parts are checked together.

Over-the-range microwaves in tight kitchens

Many San Francisco galley kitchens have a microwave mounted above the range. That position adds heat and grease from below, and the unit is held by a wall plate and cabinet screws, so removal takes two people. Whether the unit vents out or recirculates through the filter decides what airflow you should expect. Our Kenmore range hoods guide covers the ducted side of that setup.

Safe first steps

  1. Check that the plug is fully in and that the outlet or breaker has power. A GFCI that tripped can cut a microwave off.
  2. Close the door firmly and check that nothing is trapped at the seal, such as paper or a crumb.
  3. Take out the turntable and ring, clean them, and set them back correctly.
  4. Clean the cavity and wipe the door seal with a damp cloth.
  5. Try one controlled power reset by unplugging for a short while, then plugging back in.

Never open the case. A microwave stores energy even after it is unplugged, which is why internal work belongs to a technician. If you see sparks, smell burning or see smoke, unplug it or switch off the breaker and stop using it. Do not run an empty microwave to test it.

Next steps

If basic checks do not help, request a visit through Kenmore microwave repair. A technician diagnoses first, gives you a written estimate and repairs nothing without your approval. Keep the full label number and a note on what the unit does to speed things up. If your kitchen has a Kenmore range under the microwave, you may also want Kenmore ranges checked in the same visit.
