Overview

A freezer works quietly until the day the lid drips or a shelf of food goes soft. In the Bay Area, Kenmore freezers tend to live in garages, basements, laundry closets and spare rooms, which is a very different setting from a kitchen. This guide explains the freezer models we handle, what normally fails and how to protect your food while you wait for a visit through our Kenmore freezer repair service.

Models in this lineup

The Kenmore freezers we cover are all classed as freezers with a manual that covers both upright and chest layouts: Kenmore 253.16342, Kenmore 253.16542, Kenmore 253.16922, Kenmore 253.16949 and Kenmore 253.28042. Whether any of these is an upright or a chest is something we confirm at the unit, because the label is what counts, not a guess from the outside.

Where the label hides

Look on the freezer’s inner wall, usually near the top of an upright’s door opening or along the rim of a chest under the lid. Dust and frost can cover it, so wipe gently with a dry cloth. If the number is unreadable, a clear photo of the label area and the cabinet front gives us enough to start. Our guide to finding a Kenmore model number has more tips.

Common reasons a freezer misbehaves

Not freezing enough

Soft ice cream, glassy frost on packages or a warm top shelf can come from a failing fan, a stuck damper, a thermistor reading wrongly or a coil that has iced over. Kenmore freezer not freezing lists what separates those causes.

Heavy frost

A little frost is normal. Thick layers on walls, shelves or the lid seal usually point to a door that does not close tightly, a worn gasket or humid air getting in. Read Kenmore freezer frost buildup before you scrape anything.

Running constantly or not at all

A freezer that never stops may be fighting a leaking seal or poor ventilation. One that hums but stays warm could have a start-up component or a sealed-system fault; one that is silent may simply have lost power at the outlet.

Display codes

Kenmore freezers with an electronic control can show a short message. Among the models we cover, d means the door is ajar, CE is a communication error between the control panel and the control board, E is a control system error, E7 is a stuck key, and E8 and E9 both point to a defective thermistor. Note which one appears and whether it comes back after you close the door fully.

Safe first steps

  1. Check that the plug is seated and the breaker or GFCI that feeds a garage or basement outlet has not tripped. Garage outlets trip more easily than kitchen ones.
  2. Close the door or lid completely and make sure nothing, such as a bag or a basket, keeps the seal from touching.
  3. Wipe the gasket and look for tears, flat spots or a lid that no longer sits level.
  4. Make sure the cabinet has breathing room on all sides. Boxes stacked tightly against a freezer in a garage block its heat release.
  5. Do one controlled power reset and see whether a displayed code returns.

Keep the lid or door shut while you wait. Opening it repeatedly warms the contents faster than the fault does. Do not use tools on the frost or open the back panel.

Placement matters

A freezer placed in an unheated garage, a tight utility closet or next to a water heater faces conditions its design may not match. We look at where it sits, whether the floor is level and how air can move around it, because a perfectly healthy freezer can still struggle in the wrong spot.

Booking a visit

Use Kenmore freezer repair to request a diagnostic visit. A written estimate comes before any work, and nothing is repaired without your approval. If a lot of food is at risk, mention it when you book so we know what you are dealing with. Two large units in one garage, a common situation in older homes, can both be checked in one trip.
