Kenmore Ranges

Thirteen Kenmore ranges, from compact 24-inch gas units to induction, and the faults that send owners our way.

At a glance

Overview

A range does two jobs at once, which makes its faults confusing. The oven can fail while the burners work fine, a control panel can go dark while the elements still heat, and a gas range has an ignition system that behaves differently from an electric coil. This guide sorts out the Kenmore ranges we service and the checks that are safe for owners ahead of a booking through Kenmore range repair.

The range lineup

Gas ranges we cover include Kenmore 22-71942 (24-inch compact), Kenmore 22-75293 at 4.8 cu. ft., Kenmore 22-76082 at 5.2 cu. ft. and Kenmore 22-76843 at 5.6 cu. ft. Electric units are Kenmore 22-91942 (24-inch compact), Kenmore 22-95163 at 4.8 cu. ft. and Kenmore 22-96833 at 5.6 cu. ft.

Induction ranges are Kenmore 22-96853 at 5.6 cu. ft. and Kenmore 22-96873 at 5 cu. ft. A discontinued electric freestanding smoothtop, Kenmore 790.90152 (24-inch, sold April to October 2014), is no longer sold new. The compact 24-inch sizes are a natural fit for small San Francisco kitchens.

Locating the label

Usually it is on the oven door frame, the edge of the oven drawer opening or the frame behind the storage drawer. Open the oven door wide and look at the frame on the side. Write down or photograph the entire number; finding your model number lists other spots.

What goes wrong

Oven will not heat

An electric oven may have a failed bake or broil element, a sensor or a control problem. A gas oven may have an igniter that glows but fails to open the valve. See Kenmore oven not heating.

Wrong temperature

If cakes burn or take forever, the sensor or the control calibration may be off. See Kenmore oven temperature off.

Burners will not light

Clogged burner ports, a weak igniter or moisture around the spark electrode are classic reasons. See Kenmore range burner won’t light.

Door stays locked or the clock goes blank

Self-clean latches and touch panels fail with age. The code guide Kenmore oven error codes explains what appears on the display.

Reading the display

We cover many range codes, and meanings differ by family. Examples: 1d/11 means the oven is too hot in Bake or Broil mode, 9d/11 means the oven door lock assembly is defective, F3/E0 is a defective or open oven temperature sensor circuit, and F5/E1 means the self-clean latch will not lock or unlock. If the display shows a general F or E, see the generic F or E note. Write the code down before turning the power off.

Safe checks for owners

  1. Confirm the breaker for an electric range, which is usually a double breaker, or the gas valve position behind a gas range.
  2. Clean around burner caps and ports with a soft brush when everything is cool, so flame and spark can reach the burner.
  3. Close the oven door fully and check that nothing is jammed in the latch.
  4. Take the racks out and make sure foil is not covering vents or the oven floor.
  5. Do one controlled power reset by switching the breaker off and on.

If you smell gas, leave at once, avoid switches and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. Do not open the control panel or touch gas fittings.

Installation details

A range should sit level against an anti-tip bracket that engages the rear leg; if the bracket is missing, the range can tip when the door is loaded. Gas ranges also need a supply that is correct for the unit and a clear shutoff. Rentals and in-law units often have older connections, so we inspect these before assigning blame to the oven.

Booking

Request Kenmore range repair and give the model number and code if you have it. We diagnose first, provide a written estimate and repair only with approval. Stop using the oven if it sparks, smells of burning or heats uncontrollably.
