About this model

Model overview

A compact gas range

The Kenmore 22-71942 is a 24-inch compact gas range from the current Kenmore lineup. A range this narrow fits galley kitchens, small flats and in-law units, where the counters on both sides are close to the burners. Narrow spaces mean grease, spills and cleaning products reach the burner ports and igniters quickly, so many calls start with a burner that clicks without lighting.

Safety first

If you smell gas, do not switch lights or appliances on or off. Leave and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. If a burner will not light, turn the knob off and ventilate. Do not hold a lit match to a burner, and do not touch the gas connection behind the range.

Typical faults

Surface burners

A burner that clicks but stays dark may have wet or dirty ports, a misplaced burner cap or a spark module issue. A burner with a weak yellow flame often has blocked ports or a restricted supply. After a boil-over, let everything dry before trying again, and make sure the cap sits flat.

Oven

A gas oven that does not heat points toward the igniter, the safety valve or the sensor. A glow-bar igniter can glow and still be too weak to open the valve, which is why testing matters. An oven that overheats or underheats may need its thermostat or sensor checked.

Installation notes

A gas range depends on a shutoff valve, a flexible connector and an anti-tip bracket. The bracket is easy to forget after a move or a floor cleaning, and a missing bracket makes a range unsafe to pull out. We check it during the visit. Narrow ranges also need the cabinet gap kept clear on both sides, since heat and spills collect there.

Safe checks

  • Wipe the burner caps and let them dry fully.
  • Make sure each cap sits in its seat.
  • Confirm the oven is set properly and the clock or lockout is not active.
  • Check the breaker for the electronic ignition and clock.
