About this model

Model overview

Induction is different

The Kenmore 22-96853 is a 5.6 cu. ft. induction range from the current Kenmore lineup. An induction cooktop heats cookware through a magnetic field, so the surface itself stays cooler than a radiant one, and it relies on electronics that sit under the glass. That makes faults feel dramatic: a zone that was fine yesterday simply does nothing today.

Start with the cookware

Before assuming a fault, test the pan. Induction needs cookware the cooktop can detect. A pan that is too small, warped, off-center or not suited to induction can make a zone refuse to start. Try a different pan on the same zone, then the same pan on another zone. If one zone fails with several pans, that zone is suspect.

Cooktop symptoms

  • One zone does not heat but others do.
  • A zone shuts off after a short time.
  • A fan runs loudly or continuously after cooking.
  • The touch controls respond slowly or randomly.
  • A message appears and the cooktop stops.

The cooling fan matters on induction. The electronics generate heat and a fan keeps them within range. A blocked vent, a dirty fan or a failing fan can lead to shutdowns during long cooking. Keep the area around the range free of stored items.

Oven symptoms

The oven side behaves like any electric oven: bake and broil elements, a sensor, a door latch for cleaning and a control board. An oven that does not reach the set temperature or that locks the door stays on our diagnostic list. Wipe spills from the glass with a soft cloth, and keep liquids away from the control panel.

Installation notes

An induction range needs a proper power feed and an anti-tip bracket, and it should be level. Ventilation matters because of the cooling fan. In a recently remodeled kitchen, ask whether the circuit was sized for the range, because an undersized supply can lead to shutdowns under load.

What to do next

Write down the message on the display and the exact full model number. We diagnose first, give a written estimate and wait for your approval. See the Kenmore range repair page and the Kenmore ranges guide, or the error codes page under Kenmore error codes. The smaller induction sibling is the Kenmore 22-96873.
