Overview

A Kenmore refrigerator in a San Francisco kitchen is often one of several Kenmore units sharing the same wall, and many of them are older machines still doing daily duty in a rental or a family flat. This guide covers the refrigerator lineup we service, how to find the label, what usually goes wrong and what you can safely check before booking a visit through our Kenmore refrigerator repair service.

The refrigerator styles we work on

Kenmore refrigerators come in several layouts, and the layout shapes the way a fault shows up. Top-freezer models such as Kenmore 46-61332 (20.5 cu. ft., white) sit at the simple end of the range. Bottom-freezer units include Kenmore 46-75472 at 15.1 cu. ft. French-door models in the lineup include Kenmore 46-75525 at 17.5 cu. ft. and Kenmore 46-75615 at 27.4 cu. ft., while the side-by-side Kenmore 46-51845 is listed at 29 cu. ft.

Smaller units matter in city apartments: Kenmore 46-99079 is a 3.5 cu. ft. compact with a chiller compartment, and Kenmore KMRB17MBK is a 1.8 cu. ft. black beverage center. Older Kenmore Elite units such as Kenmore 596.73502 are no longer sold new but still turn up in long-held homes, and we service them as readily as current ones.

Finding the model label

The label is usually on the inside wall of the fresh-food compartment, along the door frame, or near the top of the liner. Compact and beverage units often carry it on the back or low on the inside wall. Parts for coolers and defrost systems vary between near-identical cabinets, so the full number saves a second trip. If you are stuck, the guide on how to find your Kenmore model number walks through it.

Complaints we hear most

  • Warm food compartment, cold freezer. The evaporator fan, an air damper or a frosted-over coil is often the reason cold air is not reaching the upper section. See Kenmore refrigerator not cooling.
  • Frost and ice buildup. The defrost heater, a sensor or the control may not be completing its cycle, so the coil slowly packs with frost.
  • Water on the floor. A blocked defrost drain, a loose fill tube or a cracked supply line to the ice maker or dispenser. Read Kenmore refrigerator leaking water.
  • No ice or a slow ice maker. Water supply, a frozen fill line or the ice maker module. See Kenmore ice maker not working.

Error codes and display messages

Only some Kenmore refrigerators show codes at all, and the meaning depends on the family of model. A few examples from the code pages: d2 for forced defrost mode, dr for a refrigerator door switch problem, CF for a communication failure between the main control and the user interface, and Er FF for an evaporator fan failure. The entire set is gathered in Kenmore refrigerator error codes. Write down exactly what the display shows, including the letter case, before you touch the power.

Checks you can do from the outside

  1. Confirm the outlet has power and that the breaker or GFCI has not tripped.
  2. Close both doors firmly and look for items holding a door open, such as a tall bottle or a bin that has slipped.
  3. Clear the vents inside the cabinet so air can move, and do not pack food against them.
  4. If you have a water filter or ice maker, check that the shutoff valve behind the unit is open and the supply line is not kinked where the fridge was pushed back.
  5. Do one controlled power reset: unplug, wait a few minutes, plug back in, and watch whether the code returns.

Do not remove back panels, chip ice off the coil or touch the sealed lines.

Kitchen conditions that change the diagnosis

San Francisco kitchens are tight. A refrigerator pushed flush against a wall or boxed into a cabinet recess can overheat at the condenser, and a water line crushed behind the cabinet can look like an ice maker failure. We check clearance, levelling and the supply tubing path before judging the fault.
