Kenmore repair checklist · San Francisco Bay Area

At a glance

Overview

Laundry in San Francisco often happens in odd places: a closet off the hallway, a shared basement room, a stacked pair squeezed beside the water heater. A Kenmore washer there has to cope with long hose runs, tight clearances and floors that are not always level. What follows describes the washers we service and the symptoms we are asked about most, plus a few checks that are safe to do yourself ahead of a visit through our Kenmore washer repair service.

Top-load, front-load and compact

Top-load agitator washers we cover include Kenmore 26-29162 at 4.4 cu. ft. and Kenmore 26-29182 at 4.1 cu. ft., both in white. Kenmore 26-29262 is a 4.5 cu. ft. top-load impeller washer, and Kenmore 110.31632610 is a top-loading HE unit whose availability we do not state.

Front-load machines are Kenmore 26-42272 in white and Kenmore 26-42273 in metallic silver, both 4.5 cu. ft., plus the 2.2 cu. ft. compact front-load Kenmore 26-41202, the sort of size that suits a small flat.

Finding the label

On most top-loaders it is usually inside the lid or on the rim under it. On front-loaders look at the door rim, the edge of the cabinet near the door opening or the back panel. Open the door or lid fully and use a phone light. Parts for pumps, latches and motors can differ between neighbors in the lineup, so the whole number is worth capturing; this walkthrough helps if you are unsure.

Faults we see regularly

It will not spin

A heavy, wet load that never leaves the drum can point to a drive coupling, a motor control, a lid or door switch that does not register, or an out-of-balance condition that the machine keeps trying to correct. See Kenmore washer not spinning.

Water stays in the drum

The drain pump, a clogged coin trap, a pinched drain hose or a standpipe that backs up are all candidates. Compare with Kenmore washer not draining.

Loud banging or walking

Uneven loads cause some of it, but worn suspension, a damaged drum bearing or a floor that flexes can also be involved. See Kenmore washer shaking loud.

Nothing happens at Start

Power at the outlet, a door latch that has not locked, a control fault or a water supply that is shut off. Details are in Kenmore washer won’t start.

Leaks and odors

Fill hoses, a door boot, the pump housing or an overfilled dispenser can drip. Front-loaders pick up odors when the door gasket stays damp and detergent builds up.

Codes on the display

None of the washers in this lineup has a code page here, so we do not decode letters from memory. If your washer flashes a code or a pattern of lights, write it down exactly, take a photo, and give it to us with the model number. Reading it correctly is the first step of the diagnosis.

Checks for owners

  1. Confirm the plug is firmly seated and the breaker has not tripped.
  2. Close the lid or door completely, with no clothing caught at the edge.
  3. Open both water valves behind the washer and look at the hoses for kinks, especially if the machine was pulled out for cleaning.
  4. Straighten the drain hose and make sure it is not pushed deep into the standpipe, which can siphon or back up.
  5. Redistribute a bunched load and run a spin on its own.
  6. Wipe the door gasket on a front-loader, and keep the door ajar between loads.
  7. Try one controlled power reset by unplugging for a short time.

Do not remove the cabinet or reach under a running machine. If you see smoke, smell something burning or find water around the electrical connection, switch off at the breaker.

Installation notes for tight spaces

Stacked and closet setups limit access to hoses, so a small kink can persist for years. Shared laundry rooms often run long drain lines with shaky standpipes. We look at how the washer is leveled, whether the feet are locked, and how the hoses leave the wall, since these things influence both leaks and vibration.
