About this model

Model overview

The 253.28042 is a Kenmore freezer. The manual that goes with the series covers upright and chest cabinets, so the exact layout is confirmed in your home.

When a letter appears

If the control shows a code, write it down exactly. The thermistor codes E8 and E9 are described on the E8 page and the E9 page: a defective thermistor, which is a temperature sensor. Other letters, such as CE for a communication error or E7 for a stuck key, point at the panel instead.

Why a sensor fault looks like a cooling fault

The control decides when to run the compressor and fan from the sensor signal. If that signal drifts, the freezer may run constantly and frost over, or shut off early and let the contents soften. Replacing the compressor to cure a sensor problem would be an expensive mistake, so we test the signal path before looking anywhere else.

Other things we check on a visit

  • Whether air moves across the cooling surface.
  • Gasket sealing and door alignment.
  • Condition of the wiring where it passes through the cabinet.
  • Whether the cabinet is level and has room to breathe.

Owner checks that help

Confirm power at the outlet, remove anything pressing against the lid, and let the cabinet stand for a short while with the lid shut before judging the temperature. One controlled power reset may clear a transient fault; if the letter returns, do not keep repeating it. Skip the temptation to tape over or move sensor parts, and never open panels yourself.

How the visit goes

You tell us what the freezer did and which letter appeared; we compare that with what the cabinet does when we arrive. A sensor fault can come and go, so a note about when it happens, for instance after the door was left open or in the afternoon heat of a garage, is useful. We then test the suspected parts, explain the result, and give you a written estimate. Nothing is replaced until you agree.
