The letter-number pair F9 is not universal across Kenmore ranges. Read the model number on your range first, then use the part below that fits it.
Model 721 Elite: upper oven not heating
On the electric Elite range with a 721 prefix, regular operation only ever shows three codes: F3, F9 and F19. F9 is the upper oven failing to heat. The double-oven gas Elite with a 721 prefix lists F9 under the same description.
For the electric version, the manual works from the supply inward:
- Observe whether the surface burners and the lower oven elements still heat.
- If nothing heats, suspect the house breakers. Heating elements need 240 volts, and the range might be getting just 120.
- Reset both range breakers, because one can trip without any obvious sign.
- If heat is still missing, unplug the range, look at the power cord wiring on the terminal block, tighten loose wires and replace a cord that is damaged.
When the cord and the breakers are fine, the manual hands the job to a service technician, since measuring live voltage wrongly is dangerous. For an upper oven alone that fails, unplug the range and inspect the harness joining the upper bake element to the relay control board. The upper bake element should read close to 27 ohms and is replaced if the reading is infinite. With element and wiring both fine, the upper oven sensor is measured: 1,090 ohms at 77 degrees F.
Model 362 and 790: oven door lock failure
The Kenmore 362 freestanding range and the 790-prefix self-cleaning freestanding ranges use F9 to report a door lock fault. With the range unplugged, firm up any loose connection on the harness that links the door lock assembly to the electronic control board, and replace that harness if it is damaged. A damaged lock assembly is replaced too. On the 790 ranges a technician can additionally check the door lock switch and the lock motor using a multimeter.
Other codes to compare
- F90: door unlock time exceeded, another lock-related code.
- F95: door lock failure on glass touch and slide-in ranges.
- F8: a faulty upper oven sensor, tied to upper oven heat.
Kenmore range service in San Francisco
Owners across San Francisco whose Kenmore range shows F9 can call (415) 825-6393 to set up Kenmore range repair. Read out the model number so the right series meaning is used, and mention any breaker resets you did.
Model compatibility: Kenmore reuses codes across series and model years, so F9 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
