Count of unlock tries too high: that is the control’s complaint when F91 appears on a Kenmore self-cleaning electric range. The manual states it for freestanding 790-prefix models (2004 and newer) and for the 2014 self-cleaning electric range. Kenmore glass touch electric ranges and Elite slide-in gas or dual-fuel ranges (790.3263, 790.3264, 790.4260, 790.4261, 790.4275, 790.4276) simply label F91 a door lock failure.
Self-cleaning 790 and 2014 models
Attention goes to the lock motor and the microswitch beside it. A technician traces the wiring, tests whether the cam on the latch, the motor rod or the motor cam is sticking, and fits a new lock motor assembly when the winding is open. A motor that never switches off while the microswitch is open means the oven door latch motor assembly is changed. Once all of that is cleared, the electronic oven control board is what remains to replace.
Glass touch and slide-in models
The manual’s advice for them:
- Take away power for half a minute, then switch it on again.
- Test the lock with the lockout feature or a clean cycle.
- Use cancel on a door that refuses to release.
- If the motor makes no sound, examine the harness joining the lock assembly and the oven control board, and then the lock assembly.
