F31 across Kenmore range series
Two series read F31 as a short: the 790-prefix self-cleaning electric range (2004 and newer) and the 2014 self-cleaning electric range, where the probe circuit is what has shorted. Two others word it more loosely as a sensor failure: the glass touch freestanding electric range, and the Elite slide-in gas or dual-fuel range in models 790.4276, 790.4275, 790.4261, 790.4260, 790.3264 and 790.3263.
How the 790 manual proceeds
Electrical power to the range goes off before anything is touched.
The probe is tested. Anything below 500 ohms condemns the sensor, and it is replaced.
A probe that passes is plugged back in, and the whole circuit is tested end to end.
An abnormal result sends the technician to repair the wiring; a normal result means a new control board.
For the glass touch and Elite slide-in series, the range is unplugged and resistance is read across the sensor circuit. Both procedures are technician territory.
F3/E1: shorted circuit or defective sensor on 665 model ranges.
F3E0: a sensor failure judged against 1,000 to 1,200 ohms.
Kenmore range repair covering San Francisco
When F31 shows on a Kenmore range in San Francisco or the wider Bay Area, call (415) 825-6393 and a technician will take it from there. Have the code, the model number, which style of range it is and whether power was cut ready to share. See Kenmore range repair for the service overview.
Model compatibility: Kenmore reuses codes across series and model years, so F31 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
Plain language
What this code means
Oven temperature sensor circuit shorted, or sensor failure on some series.
Important safety warning. Do not attempt repairs involving electrical components, gas, water lines, refrigerant or sealed systems. Unplug the appliance if it is safe to reach the outlet, and leave internal diagnostics to a qualified technician.
