Error code F9E1 (9-1)
Appliance Dishwasher

Two unrelated faults share the F9E1 label, and the model number tells you which applies.

If the model number starts with 665

On these the tub is slow to empty. Work through the owner checks in this order:

  1. Clean the filter.
  2. Check the drain hose, the disposer knockout plug and the air gap.
  3. Cycle the power: off for 30 seconds, then on again.

HE, Elite HE, Global HE and MicroClean HE

Here the electronic control board can no longer tell where the diverter disc sits. The disc is set by the diverter motor, which decides whether water reaches the lower or the upper spray arm, and the motor reports the position to the board. Without that report the code appears, as 9-1 on the display or as a flashing Clean light where there is no digital readout.

  • Unplug the dishwasher.
  • Inspect the wiring that runs to the diverter motor. Loose wires get reconnected; a harness that is damaged gets changed.
  • If the wiring is fine, the motor is at fault and gets replaced, since it sends no position signal.

Model compatibility: Kenmore reuses codes across series and model years, so F9E1 (9-1) may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.

Plain language

What this code means

F9E1 means a long drain on 665-prefix models, or an undetectable diverter disc position on HE-series models.

Important safety warning. Do not attempt repairs involving electrical components, gas, water lines, refrigerant or sealed systems. Unplug the appliance if it is safe to reach the outlet, and leave internal diagnostics to a qualified technician.
