Error code F6E4 (6-4)
Appliance Dishwasher

When the float switch in a Kenmore dishwasher reads open, F6E4 is the result. Kenmore HE and Elite HE units show it on a digital display, Global HE and MicroClean HE units list it too, and display-less models blink 6-4 on the Clean light.

Cause one: an obstruction at the float

See if the overfill float is sticking, or if something has lodged under it. Whatever is blocking it should be cleared out.

Cause two: a fill valve that will not close

  • An inlet valve stuck open lets water keep flowing into the tub, and the surplus trips the float switch.
  • Make sure the fill valve really cuts off the supply when the dishwasher is switched off.
  • If it does not, that valve is replaced.

Cause three: the float switch itself

A technician unplugs the unit and reads resistance through the switch. A healthy one shows close to 0 ohms while the tub is empty or nearly so. Infinite resistance means a new float switch.
