Error code F3E3 (3-3)
Appliance Dishwasher

Two different faults can raise F3E3 (3-3) on a Kenmore dishwasher. Either the optical water indicator did not calibrate, or the check valve inside the drain hose gave way and dirty water flowed back into the tub.

Where the code applies

Kenmore HE and Kenmore Elite HE dishwashers with a digital display show F3E3. On the other models of those series the Clean light flashes 3-3. The Global HE and the MicroClean HE list it too.

Step 1: test the drain hose for backflow

  • Detach the hose from the air gap. With no air gap, detach it from the disposer.
  • Run water down the hose and see whether any of it rises into the tub.
  • Water coming back means the check valve has failed, and the hose section that joins the drain pump is replaced.

Step 2: if nothing backs up

  1. Reconnect the hose.
  2. Run the Service Diagnostics Test described on the tech sheet. A low soil level should appear during the OWI test.
  3. A high soil level calls for unplugging the dishwasher and cleaning the OWI sensor.
  4. After cleaning, put it back together, plug it in and run the diagnostic test cycle. That lets the control board calibrate the OWI sensor on the next cycle. Then run a normal wash.
  5. If the code is still there, the thermistor/OWI sensor is replaced.

Related sensor codes

  • F3E1 is the broad thermistor or OWI sensor failure.
  • F3E2 is the shorted-sensor version.

What this code means

The OWI sensor failed to calibrate, or the drain hose check valve failed and let dirty water flow back.
