Error code LED 1 flicker
Appliance Refrigerator

No display message here. Kenmore top-freezer refrigerators with 111-prefix model numbers speak through an LED on the main control board instead. It flashes a few times, stops, then starts over; the count is the code. A single flash = the refrigerator temperature sensor has failed.

Counting with care

  • You can only see the LED after taking off the main control board cover.
  • Whenever the refrigerator is plugged in, the board is energized. Do not reach inside while the cover is off.
  • Disconnect power at the plug, and put the cover back once you have your count.

The sensor itself

According to the manual, it is fastened to the rear wall of the fresh-food compartment. With the unit unplugged, inspect the wires between it and the control board and mend any that are broken. A technician finishes the job by measuring resistance through the circuit and swapping the sensor if the figure is outside the manual’s range.
